Today America celebrates Independence Day–a day to relax with family and friends, drink a few beers, eat comfort food and ooh and aah over the spectacular fireworks that will be on display when twilight descends.  But how many of us really consider the words that started this day in motion on July 4, 1776?  I must admit…I hadn’t read The Declaration of Independence since my US government course in college.

 

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

 

The second sentence of The Declaration of Independence has been said to be the heart and soul of America.  All men [and I would add, “women”; Grimm would add “canines” to that sentence if he was asked his opinion] are created…

Time has come again

With Jimmy Cliff singing Rivers of Babylon on an apple-green cassette player, she opened wide the doors to a strange new fashion world the likes of which had not been seen in this country before. It was filled with vintage clothing and bohemian designs from London. Soon, the designs of Kee’s new friend Linda Jackson were added to the mix. At a time when Australian fashion meant copying the latest trends from London, Paris and New York, Kee and Jackson built a reputation for exuberant pieces featuring Australian flora and fauna and all the colours of the landscape. Waratah and wattle, koalas and kangaroos, Kee and Jackson appliqued them onto silk dresses, printed them onto flowing maxis. Famously, Kee incorporated them into knitwear. Photographs of Princess Diana wearing a “koala” jumper while pregnant with Prince William in 1982 would give them a global audience. “I never thought they’d be as popular as they were,” says Kee.

Keep trying

This life is what you make it. No matter what, you’re going to mess up sometimes, it’s a universal truth. But the good part is you get to decide how you’re going to mess it up. Girls will be your friends – they’ll act like it anyway. But just remember, some come, some go. The ones that stay with you through everything – they’re your true best friends. Don’t let go of them. Also remember, sisters make the best friends in the world. As for lovers, well, they’ll come and go too. And baby, I hate to say it, most of them – actually pretty much all of them are going to break your heart, but you can’t give up because if you give up, you’ll never find your soulmate. You’ll never find that half who makes you whole and that goes for everything. Just because you fail once, doesn’t mean you’re gonna fail at everything. Keep trying, hold on, and always, always, always believe in yourself, because if you don’t, then who will, sweetie? So keep your head high, keep your chin up, and most importantly, keep smiling, because life’s a beautiful thing and there’s so much to smile about.
